The problem
We are losing 50 football fields of trees per minute because our food systems destroy our ecosystems. Most of this decline takes place in the developing tropical regions of Africa, Latin America and South and Southeast Asia, where hundreds of millions of chronically hungry, small-scale farming families use destructive and shortsighted farming methods that affect the trees, soil, water and further affect the biodiversity of their communities, making them even more likely to migrate and more vulnerable to climate change
The solution
The Trees for the Future Forest Garden program is a simple, replicable and scalable approach with proven success. Over a period of 4 years, Trees for the Future trains farmers to revitalize their land in a sustainable way. They provide training, seeds, tools and materials, in short, everything they need. Through the Forest Garden approach, farmers plant thousands of trees that protect nutrients and return them to the soil. This helps farmers grow a variety of fruits and vegetables. The Forest Garden farmers receive more income and food security, even during the first year.
Vision, mission and goal of Trees for the Future
Trees for the Future has a vision that envisions a world where every farmer has a Forest Garden on their land as a reliable source of nutrition and income. This reality creates an environmentally friendly and sustainable global food system. Trees for the Future is on a mission to provide small farmers with ways out of poverty and hunger by planting trees in Forest Gardens around the world. Trees for the Future aims to lift 1 million people out of hunger and poverty by 2025 by creating 125,000 Forest Gardens.
Where Trees of the Future works
Trees of the Future is currently working with thousands of farmer families to plant trees and change lives in five countries south of the Sahara in Africa. They focus on Cameroon, Kenya, Senegal, Uganda and Tanzania, as these are areas where they have the greatest impact and see the best results.
Trees for the Future has planted more than 180 million trees since 1989 and has changed more than 100,000 lives.
